Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you enjoy a good read during a vacation? Many of our students do, too. We have had great success with our independent reading program this year, and we want to continue this summer! To do this, we need 134 copies of a popular fiction text.

Our school is an alternative second-chance school- a transfer school that prepares learners for college and opportunity.

Many of our students come to us because they appreciate the smaller classes, hands-on approach, and extra support. This approach is rare in the inner-city environment our students have grown up in, and our model has been supporting students for decades. We have high standards and expectations for our learners, and we would love to be able to extend our independent reading program this summer.

My Project

These copies of a popular fiction text will allow our students to continue their free-reading over the summer. While we have been doing library trips and supplementing our classroom libraries with these visits, we would love to have all students read a common text so that we can have a deep discussion about the issues raised by it when we return in the fall.

We will be able to do a summer reading program for the first time ever if you choose to support this project.

Our students will enjoy reading the text, but go a step further- they will be assigned a series of writing prompts that will encourage them to think critically about the text's messages and ideas, particularly around issues of gender. Please allow us to make this important project a reality.
