My Students

Fat is NOT where it's at! Children today are caught up with electronics and TV....they need to get back to good, old-fashioned exercise.

As an urban, Title I school, my students do not get to go outdoors, run, and exercise appropriately.

They are becoming obese and, physically, out of shape. They are easily out of breath just climbing a set of stairs or walking the length of a football field. Although it is nearly impossible for us to go outside to run, play, walk vigorously, or complete aerobic exercise, we could easily use a piece of indoor equipment, taking turns while working on our academics.

My Project

It would be a dream come true to see my students exercising, losing weight, and gaining some self-confidence. Setting up an exercise station in our classroom would be truly awesome. The students could rotate to the station (just like they rotate to the reading, math, or art stations) throughout the school day. We could use math to chart their progress (time on the machine, distance, tension used, weight lost, etc) too. While on the machine they could read their novels and humanities assignments. Nothing could be more grand than to see the students grow academically while becoming more physically fit and healthy. Being able to change a child's future, both physically and mentally, is powerful!

With all the news stories of how our young people today are obese, acquiring diseases (such as asthma and diabetes) at early ages and alarming rates, how could you say no to a purchase to change that?!
