Hold It!

My students need an instrument stand and adapter to hold a bass xylophone.

My Students

Three years ago, I found a beautiful bass xylophone in a scratch and dent sale, for $1300 less than it sold for brand new. However, it weighs 65 pounds, which means that it is very difficult to move, either by myself or my elementary school age students.

I am the elementary music teacher for 450 wonderful children in grades k-5.

Last year, I had 22 countries represented in my fifth grade classes alone, so I have an amazing mix of students. Because of this, I try to include a lot of multicultural music in my lessons, especially in the fifth grade. About 40% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, we have an increasing homeless population, and the largest ESL (English Second Language) numbers in our school division. For most of these students, their weekly music class is their only exposure to any kind of music other than what they hear on the radio.

My Project

We have several xylophones of different sizes. The children love to play these instruments, because of the beautiful tone quality and the fact that you can remove bars that you don't need, so it is less likely that you will play the "wrong note." I use the xylophones in the lower grades for basic musical concepts, such as steady beat, fast and slow, loud and soft, high and low. In the upper grades, the xylophones are used to accompany singing and dancing, mostly from other countries. The combination of childrens' singing voices with these instruments is absolutely gorgeous! It gives them a feeling of pride and ownership, that they are able to create an accompaniment for a song or dance, which leads to a feeling of musical independence.

Unfortunately, because the bass xylophone weighs so much and is so cumbersome, I rarely use it with my classes.

I don't have a budget for equipment, so if you are able to help with funding this instrument stand, it would mean that this beautiful instrument could be used during the entire school year, instead of for a couple of weeks, because I am unable to move it in and out of the storage closet on a daily basis. Instead, it could "live" in the music room and be readily accessible!
