My Students

"I hate to read." That's what I hear every day. High school students hate reading, but I want to bring the joy of reading back to these students from a poor, rural county. I am creating a center approach in my high school classroom, including a reading center and a listening center for audiobooks.

I teach in a county where most of the people are employed by farming or the prison system.

My students come from literacy-poor homes. Seventy percent of our school receives free or reduced lunch. Our students want to go to college, but most of them lack the literacy skills to be successful. We have a lot of kinesthetic and auditory learners, and a large population of identified special education students. This is a traditional public high school, and these are very typical high school kids.

My Project

With these resources, I will eliminate desks from my classroom where students are made to sit still for 90 minutes at a time. Picture a high school classroom where students are excited and engaged in reading, writing, listening, and sharing. These materials will allow me to create stations where students can interact with books that they're interested in. It will allow struggling readers to listen to audiobooks. The beanbags will give students a comfortable place to work, read, and write and create a welcoming, non-intimidating atmosphere. In short, these materials will help me make reading fun again.

Without vital literacy skills, my students cannot be successful, in school or the real world.

Students have to learn to be lifelong readers and writers. To do that, we have to take the dread out of literacy. We have to get students engaged and motivated. We have to let them move and interact. By creating this center-approach to literacy, I will bring the students back to books and writing in meaningful, task-driven ways.
