Tools for Teen Parents

My students need sets of objects to use during creative block play including multi-ethnic families, career figures, sets of vehicles, natural objects, and animals.

My Students

Completing high school while parenting is a gigantic challenge for my students. I co-direct the Parent Child Center at my school where students learn child development and parenting while working with young children of fellow students.

My students come from challenging backgrounds including being homeless, having not succeeded in regular schools, not attending school on a regular basis, and being affected by substance abuse and physical violence.

One third of the students I teach have special needs. Some students are homeless and are living in a different place each evening. In the summer of 2008, my community experienced record-breaking flooding. Most floods affected families who were living in low-income housing near the river and that included a large percentage of the students I work with. Now, two summers later, families are still experiencing the effects of the flood. My students come from families of poverty, limited resources, challenges of substance abuse, violence, criminal histories and limited literacy. They often are doing the very best they can and are committed to completing their high school education by breaking barriers to their success.

My Project

These resources will be used by the preschool children in our center to contribute to an appropriate early childhood environment. The materials will be used for creative block play and dramatic play. Children will use these materials indoors and outdoors. We utilize the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale to guide us in providing a high quality environment for our young children. This tool indicates that we need more variety in the materials children play with, including a better balance of multi-cultural toys. The figures will also be used in working with the high school students. These students are making career choices and life-changing commitments in securely attaching to their young children. The characters will be used to help them think through their options and positive choices for their lives. They will be used to discuss parenting skills and the importance of providing a secure base for their young children.

This project is significant in that it touches the lives of both young children and their young parents.

It provides resources for two generations in seeking to change patterns of behavior. These materials will help generate success for high school students as well as prepare young children for success in school, hopefully changing family patterns.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
