My Students

Have you ever wondered what the music on the other side of the world sounds like? How do they dance? What instruments do they play? My music students would love to experience these wonderful art forms for themselves through the power of technology.

I currently serve over 700 students between two different schools.

They come from all backgrounds and cultures. We are a "world class" school. The students speak different languages, however, they come together to celebrate music. All students receive music for 40 minutes only one time per week. Music class is something they look forward to. It serves as a creative outlet for them. I currently do not have a music room at my larger school. Instead I teach from a cart and travel from classroom to classroom to teach music class. This limits our ability to use computers and technology. Having a laptop would mean being able to take my lessons between schools! Students would greatly benefit from this addition to our program. We would use it for many, many projects from composing to learning about other cultures through the power of music!

My Project

My students are eager to learn about world music. They would like to compare and contrast their cultures with those of other nations. Many have never seen an African dance or a Sitar performance. Some do not know what an Irish jig looks like. How exciting it would be to show them! With this laptop my music students could see and hear first hand what world music sounds and looks like. We would also use the laptop to produce music videos and projects. Students could make PowerPoint presentations on various composers, instruments, and genres. Our music classes would be much more engaging with the use of a laptop. I could use the laptop to show song lyrics, PowerPoint lessons, and videos. We are receiving new textbooks this year and they are on cd-rom. I will be unable to use our new textbooks without a computer. Unfortunately our school district cannot provide the music teachers with the technology we need at this time.

In closing, I strongly believe that technology can make any class more engaging and rewarding.

Students would have many opportunities to explore the arts. Music is a cross-curricular subject, which means it will also cross over into other areas of learning such as social sciences, language arts, math, science, art, and more. Music has a magical power like nothing else. It touches lives and enhances our minds. Please allow me to give my students the musical experience they deserve.
