My Students

Do you remember the first time you were told to write a story? I bet that your mind went blank. A variety of artists, genres and authors approach story telling in countless ways. Students learn to write by imitating what they see and hear. First graders are full of imagination but need guidance.

Our school is a suburban community.

We are located in South Carolina. The community has numerous neighborhoods. We are growing quickly. My children love to see the horses and cows early in the morning as we head to school. I will teach first grade in the fall. First graders need a variety of experiences to become good writers. Books are a natural way to explore the outside world through the authors of books.

My Project

My students need picture books, such as Flotsam, to read and be read to for inspiration in writing. Picture books help students see, hear and feel what good writers do. My plan is to use the books as springboards to writing. I will take students and help them take mini- trips to new places through the pages in a book. Students can hear the different voices, use of vocabulary, and organization of the stories. The books can be revisited through out the year in our writing center when they need ideas.

I feel this project is critical to the first graders.

I want to help my students become great writers. They may not be famous but they must be able to communicate in writing to be successful as adults. I think this will make writing fun! Our state as many others are having budget problems so purchasing books that can be used year after year is a good investment.
