My Students

My students are just waiting to fall in love with reading. They have not yet read a book that they could become totally immersed in - a book that would cause them to lose track of time and place. I would like for this to change!

I am a second grade reading specialist at a rural Missouri school.

My students are wonderful children. They are hard-working, intelligent, and kind. However, they struggle with reading. My students think that reading is a chore instead of something that can capture their imaginations.

My Project

At the end of this school year, I pushed the boring leveled readers that came with our reading series aside and I gave each student a copy of "The Littles." By the first chapter I was asking myself why I hadn't done this sooner. My students were so excited about the story. They were making predictions, asking questions, and trying to read ahead. They were also going to the library to check out other books from the series. They loved coming up to me and telling me about what they had read. After we read "The Littles," I had my students start reading "The Magic Tree House" books. The result was the same. I was very pleased that my students' reading scores were suddenly increasing and they obviously had a new-found love of reading; however, I was sad because this realization came at the end of the school year. Next year I would like to start out strong. I want to give my students high quality books and get them interested in reading.
