Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Fifth grade is the last grade in our school before our students move on to middle school. It is our last chance to make sure our students are ready to be independent learners. Student planners are an incredibly effective way in getting students organized and holding themselves accountable.

My school is a visual and performing arts magnet that services a low socioeconomic population.

Our student population struggles most with language arts and practicing skills at home is crucial to getting them caught up and confident in their abilities. However, many of these students speak English as their second language, so homework can be a challenge, as well as finding a family member who can help. Many go home to a hectic home life and have a difficult time focusing on their homework. In addition, this is a population that lacks environmental education, yet suffers the most from effects pollution.

My Project

After much reflection, it became apparent to me and my colleagues that our students need us to create the rigid structure for homework that we provide for classwork at school. We need to create a "no excuses" policy that holds students accountable for finding a time and place to do their assignments, asking for help if they have a question, and getting their assignments signed by a guardian. If we can do this, why not send the message that being organized and responsible also means making good environmental decisions?

Students need to be taught how to be responsible and organized just like they need to be taught algebra or reading comprehension.

Student planners give students an outline for how to keep their assignments listed, and it is a terrific way to keep parents/guardians and teachers connected. By using 100% recycled planners, we are further teaching our students that sustainability is part of being responsible.
