My Students

Our school teaches Community Helpers in kindergarten, but my unique students were not all able to pay attention! A recent chance to play with a small Lego set showed me they didn't even know how to be good neighbors.

My fantastic students come from struggling, inner-city families.

They may have a game system or even two in their homes, but not a lot of toys. Blocks, Lego's, small figures, animal sets, and pretend money fascinate them. Some of my students have never built a house or fort, shoved a toy car around, or seen dolls and figurines with skin and hair matching their own. A recent indoor recess showed me that even my third graders do not know how to share or play with toys kindly.

My Project

A few building sets with multicultural community helpers and some books we can read and share will spark creativity and appreciation in my primary students. Our city will need brave firefighters, caring nurses, strong teachers, intelligent storekeepers, and good neighbors in the future. Seeing, reading, hearing, and imagining are essential for children to develop this awareness and the requisite social skills.

Do you remember building with Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, blocks and Lego's?

Did you get to know the police because they lived next door, or because they took your parents away? My children need the chance to use their imagination, read good books, learn to share toys, and develop an awareness of how we all work together as a community. You can help make that happen!
