This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my 4-year-old Pre-K students come to school with little experience in counting or identifying numbers. With our Title I budget being cut yearly, often the Pre-K class is overlooked while materials and technology are purchased for our K-4 classes.
My students are energetic, active, and enthusiastic learners who absorb new information like little sponges.
Many come from economically disadvantaged homes. Many parents are interested in helping their children but lack the materials or knowledge of what to do. Our school is a Title I school with more than 80% qualifying for free and reduced lunches.
My Project
If my students had unifix cubes with the counting stairs that go with them, they would be able to practice counting cubes from 1 to 10 during small group activities and during centers. If they had frogs on the logs, they could practice counting out from 1 to 10 frogs during center time. If they had snap together counting cubes, they could practice identifying the numbers and counting out cubes.
By supporting this project, you will provide my young learners with developmentally appropriate materials that will help them build basic skills of counting which is necessary for developing more challenging skills later in their learning.
