My Students

Imagine students spending a day in school and volunteering time outside of school to learn science by preparing, maintaining and harvesting a school garden. This is my goal!

My students are very motivated, resourceful students who happen to live in rural Maine with a very high poverty rate.

They are the future of our community. They are middle school students who need to have bellies full of healthy foods, rather than hungry bellies, and they are eager to learn greener practices and life skills.

My Project

We are in desperate need for soil sampling kits to help our school garden project. We are working to create a sustainable garden project that would involve the community and school. The goal is for the students to benefit from fresh, local food that would supplement our lunch program and provide healthy snacks to our entire Pre-K through eighth grade students. I am working to build a curriculum that integrates multiple contents and specifically support our three science areas: Life, Earth and Physical science. We are also in need of hand tools since this is a project without a school budget to support our work. The soil kits will help us determine what is needed for the greatest harvest and how to rotate our crops while looking at chemical releases and soil formation.

Just as the foundation supports a building, so do the proper tools in a garden.

This project is only as successful as we choose to make it, but I am limited to the resources. I need to make sure that we have the proper materials to make this an ongoing learning experience that is started to the best of our ability. Help us watch our goals grow!
