Van deGraaff Generator Fun

My students need a Van de Graaff generator to experience electrostatics in a very fun way.

My Students

When thinking of classic Physics demonstrations the Van de Graaff generator always comes to mind. Movies often show the student holding on to the silver ball and watching their classmates hair stand on end. Due to our lack of Physics equipment, my students do not experience this classic.

Our school is the first Waldorf inspired PUBLIC high school in North America.

We are located in the capitol city of our state. Our city was considered the most diverse city by Life Magazine a few years ago. Our student population is very diverse and we have many English Language Learners who tend to come from low income families. Despite being from the inner city and nearby suburbs, our students are enthusiastic and generally well behaved. We have a family atmosphere at our school and parents come to visit regularly. Students who come to our school are generally interested in Art and farming. We have an active seed to table program and are helping other schools and residents in our city to grow gardens. Our school's test scores increased more than any other school in our district since we became a Waldorf program last year. We accept all students who wish to attend. Waldorf science in based on observing phenomena like the effects of static electricity on a Van de Graaff generator.

My Project

Imagine 25 pairs of eyes watching one of their classmates with their hair standing on end then explaining why. Afterwords, they see demonstrations of flying and levitating plates flying hydra and more. With each demonstration, students watch and come up with an explanation, with the guidance of the teacher, of how the demonstration works and thus generate their own correct understanding of static electricity. Students at the school where I previously taught talked about these demonstrations years later. This is much better than just rubbing balloons on your head and sticking them to the wall. Of course, we will do this as well as making our own static energy generators as well. Students will learn about static electricity and most importantly, that Physics is fun.

Students interested in art tend to be afraid of Physics.

By experiencing phenomena, students will see that Physics is observable and fun. Waldorf curriculum requires experiencing phenomena. We learn by experiencing phenomena. The demonstrations that can be done with a Van de Graaff generator are unforgettable and very helpful in learning about electricity. No Physics class is complete without this classic demonstration. Our district cannot afford new science equipment due to our large deficit.
