Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students struggle with the 3-D shapes in geometry. We try and collect home items to share in a shape museum and we would like these materials to build real math shapes to go with our museum. Geometry is very spacial and hands on tools help bridge the gap between real and drawn shapes.

My students are mighty minds.

They are ones that are always asking questions, trying new things and challenge me every day. They attend a high needs school that is also a performing school because of the enthusiasm our students have. We know all of us can succeed no mater what our home lives may be like. We say a pledge every day that says they will act in a way that the can be proud of themselves and that they came to school to learn and they will learn even when no one is watching. These are the kids that make me get up every day come and stay til 6 at night and the ones I get excited about when they learn a new concept for the first time. They make it all worth it.

My Project

I am asking for a class set of polydrons, prism and pyramid polydrons, and angle legs. These geometry tools will help my students get their hands on learning. They will build shapes, and then use math vocabulary that is on our high stakes state test and really know what those words mean. I am also asking for some games that reinforce geometric shapes and concepts. These games will help all student especially the Kinesthetic kids who love the hands on learning. Blockus is a great game to learn spacial concepts in geometry and is an up and coming game.

It is important to not only teach and draw shapes but to understand them through exploration.

Kids learn and remember more when they are actively engaged in the lesson. These materials will help with an abstract concept and put it in the hands of our up and coming leaders. They will put their brains to good use. With your donation not only will our class get to use these materials but our whole school will benefit from the use of these materials.
