My Students

When you see the eyes of a child light up because they have found something that really peaks their interest, you know that you are witnessing a special moment. So much of our amazing world is a mystery to students these days, and it's incredible to see how a book about real life can impact them.

My class is uniquely designed to build literacy skills while teaching the content that students need.

We emphasize reading strategies that help students decode anything they come across on their journey to college. To teach as much literacy and content as I need to, I need to fill my library with the kind of books that make jaws drop and eyes widen. The books I do have already have worked wonders with our struggling readers as they have been able to find the kind of books that are both educational and accessible.

My Project

With an amazing assortment of nonfiction books, I can create the kind of library that will inspire students to wonder and learn. I have selected books about animals and earthquakes, war and heroes, the kind of books that have the dazzling pictures that kids love to look at and share with their friends. With these topics needing to covered in our curriculum, I can use the books to lead into incredible hands-on lessons. And once the fire of curiosity has been lit, these books can deepen the learning of students who are fascinated by a particular subject.

We all know that reading is the key to unlocking a great future.

At KIPP schools, we strongly believe that reading is our number one priority and we don't just talk the talk. With your help, we will be able to walk the walk even more than we already do. With the kind of library I'm trying to build, we will be able to create a nonfiction program that rivals the fiction programs at most schools. Our students deserve the best of everything as they climb the mountain to college.
