My Students

Have you ever been walking in the woods or through your neighborhood and wondered what kind of tree that is? My students would like to create an interactive website that would allow you to find and correctly identify the most common (and some uncommon) tree species in Pennsylvania.

My students are 9th, 11th, and 12th grade biology students.

They attend a rural public school in Pennsylvania. The district is fairly large in area covered, but the classes are small. A graduating class typically has 75-100 students. Most students in our school fall into a lower socioeconomic bracket. The school is situated on 72 acres of land and much of this land is forested.

My Project

I am requesting 4 Cannon digital cameras for this project. The students need to use these cameras in order to complete the project. The students here enjoy lab work and outside lab activities. Watching my students engaged in outdoor ecology activities, I have witnessed a real need for basic knowledge of their local environment. Being able to identify common plant and animal species seen in our woodlands and open spaces, has become a lost skill. Many of the students have also recognized this lack of knowledge and became engrossed in learning more. As a result of using field guides and dichotomous keys to identify plant and animal species, they asked if there was a good website they could use to do the same thing. I told them not yet! My students will be able to identify all of the common tree species in Pennsylvania. They will also use current technology in photographing the various species and using the photographs and descriptions to create an interactive web page.

By donating to this project, students will be able to create a resource that can be accessed and used by an unlimited number of other students, and people interested in identifying tree species.

Students engaged in this project will use and gain a number of 21st century skills that they will need as they continue their education and lives beyond high school.
