My Students

My boys are not reading! The boys in my small groups and classrooms are not reading at the level they are capable of.

My students live in a high-poverty area and do not have a wide variety of books from which to choose.

The two copies of interesting books that are in the library are always checked out or missing! Specifically, the boys I work with are not reading enough because they are not interested in the books available.

My Project

I have chosen some proven winners - Diary or a Wimpy Kid, How to Train Your Dragon, and a new series from Rick Riordan, The Red Pyramid. Kids are so excited to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid because of the pictures and interesting topic. Also, I chose Captain Underpants - lots of farting and toilet humor to get the boys interested!

My male students are not reading as much as they need to in order to improve their reading.

I think this is because the school does not have the high-interest, super-cool books boys want to read.
