Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” ~ Margaret Fuller “I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn" ~ Albert Einstein I believe that books are necessary to learning. The more a child is willing to read; the more they are willing to learn.

My students attend a elementary school with a large population.

We only get the opportunity to visit the library once a week for half an hour. I try to provide books in our classroom. However we have very limited space. Most of my students are very eager to read. They will go to the library and choose a chapter book that will last them a whole week. Other students aren't aware of the joy of reading. These students will choose one short non-fiction book that has more pictures than words. It is these students in particular that I want to reach. My "reluctant readers" need books available to them on a daily basis so that they will eventually feel comfortable choosing a new type of book.

My Project

I would like to provide my students with a standing book rack. This book rack holds all different types of books; from picture books to chapter books. I think that the style of the rack will appeal to my students. It will make them feel encouraged to go peruse the selection of books available. It would also benefit our classroom in another way. We do a lot of small group work and our current bookcase takes up too much room. The one we have now is a long wooden garage sale find that takes up 6 feet of space. The standing bookcase would free up a lot of room for other activities. In addition, the shelves aren't really suited to children's book and it is pretty beat up. We try to keep our books organized in small baskets but that makes is very hard to see all the titles available.

Please help my students get (more) interested in reading.

Anything I can do to interest them in our book corner is worth the effort. This book rack won't just benefit this class of students but next year's students also. Show them that books are worth showcasing and displaying properly.
