My Students

Let me show you tornado ally is located? Oh, I forgot. We don't have a map in the lab. This project will provide wall maps and periodic tables for each of the nine elementary schools in my district.

For the the past six years, I have been developing a hands-on, standards based, fourth and fifth grade science activity program that serves nearly 1400 students at nine elementary schools.

Our test scores in science have been soaring. In fact, in 2008 and 2009 our districts science scores were actually higher than our district's language arts scores. Nearly 25% of our economically disadvantaged fifth grade students scored advanced on California's STAR Science Test, three times the rate for our county and state. There is no one factor that is responsible for our success, rather, it is the sum of all we do that makes the biggest difference for our students. A key component of our success has been our ability to make difficult concepts real, touchable, and understandable. My students have launched hot air balloons, built electrical circuits, and created clouds in giant five gallon water bottles. But don't ask them to look at the map on the wall; we don't have one.

My Project

My students need it all. They need to do science, talk about science, read science, write science, and think science. Having world maps and periodic tables in each lab will provide my students with a valuable visual resource that will be constantly used. Where's tornado alley? Where do the hurricanes that strike the United States form? Why are magnets attracted to cobalt, nickel, and iron? How come the noble gases don't react with other elements? Why does a salt solution conduct electricity? Our explorations of these questions will be enhanced by having a map and a periodic table in each lab.

If we are going to close the achievement gap, we must first strive to close the experience gap.

That's why I strive to make science accessible, touchable, and fun. Having a world map and a periodic table will provide my students with a resource that we can use throughout the year. This project will provide a resource that will be used by every elementary student at each of the nine schools in my district.
