Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success," Henry Ford stated. I want to instill the sense of community with my students. Some of my students need a place where they feel they belong and that is what I want to create in my classroom.

I am a teacher in a dual language classroom, I teach my students in English and Spanish.

My students come from different walks of life. Some of my students live with extended families in order to make ends meet. Some are considered to be homeless and live in shelters. My students do not really have anything that they feel is truly theirs. That is the reason I assure them that the classroom is "our classroom" and they take such pride in that. The only thing that my students have in common is that they love coming to school every single day. When they are sick, their parents tell me that they want to come to school regardless. Considering the community that surrounds our school, which include motels, shelters and gangs, it pleases me to know that my students still want to get an education. My students strive everyday to do their best. They enjoy learning and talking in both languages. My goal as their teacher is for them to become proficient in both languages.

My Project

Cooperative learning teaches a sense of responsibility to themselves and others. Students take ownership of their own learning and achievements. Studies show that students who work collaboratively are able to learn quicker, retain information, and feel more positive about their learning experience. As a classroom teacher I want to include more opportunities for my students to learn more effectively through cooperative learning. Dr. Kagan's strategies and research about cooperative learning is known throughout the educational field. I want to implement many of the research based activities and strategies that Dr. Kagan has created. A large majority of the items that I included in this project are to build that sense of cooperative learning and community. Students learn best through hands-on activities, conversing with each other, and working with each other. This project will instill in my students a sense of belonging and give them a sense of worth and purpose.

My classroom is a safe haven for my students.

My students know that when they walk into our classroom that they are valued and they belong. In the Hispanic culture, students are not suppose to speak until they are spoken to. This project will assist them in opening up and sharing their ideas and thoughts with one another. No one learns alone, but everyone learns together.
