The Cycle of Giving

My students need 2 greenhouses to help them understand the life-cycle of a plant.

My Students

As part of our science curriculum, my 2nd graders study the life-cycle of a plant. I also like to find ways to help our community. With the greenhouses, we will be able to raise plants to help understand and observe the life-cycle and then donate the plants we raise to community organizations.

My class is a wonderful array of boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 7.

We are a self-contained 2nd grade class in a school that teaches Pre-K to 3rd grade students. A sense of community is something that our school embraces. Food is collected for the needy at Thanksgiving and Easter time. Our volunteers are honored with donations to organizations that the children vote on. Several classes adopt families at the holidays to fulfill wish-lists that were given to our town social worker. This past holiday season, my class ran a fund-raiser for our local animal shelter. That is a picture of them with all that we collected after the car had been packed. Giving back to your community is something that I want to foster in them so that it becomes second nature.

My Project

We are requesting two greenhouses for the classroom. It is my plan to utilize the greenhouses to grow seasonal types of plants for two reasons. First, it will allow the children to observe the life-cycle of a plant throughout the year and in various plants. Second, as our plants mature, because they are seasonal and because I want to continue to foster a sense of community service, the children and I will donate our plants to the local assisted living center here in town and decorate for the residents that live there. I am excited at the prospect of connecting learning and community service.

I believe that by enriching this scientific concept, students will gain so much more information than by just doing the typical bean in a piece of paper towel experiment to understand the life cycle of a plant.

It is also so important to try and link learning to community service so we send out well-rounded, caring individuals into our communities. It is my hope that learning will be more engaging and interesting when you can apply it to helping others.
