Rockin' Crocs' Reading Tournament-Year 4

My students need one copy of each of the 19 Children's Book Award Nominees to add to our classroom library and use for a school-wide Reading Tournament.

My Students

Choose a book, any book. Sometimes I feel that students do not know how to choose a good book that is appropriate for their age and reading ability. By adding the South Carolina Children's Book Award Nominees to our classroom library, my students will have appropriate books to choose from.

I teach fourth grade Language Arts and Social Studies in a public elementary school.

I will have between 23 and 25 students in my homeroom next year, and I will teach between 45 and 50 students total. The theme of my classroom is Crocodile Cove so we are the Rockin' Crocs! I would like a copy of each of the South Carolina Children's Book Award Nominees to add to our classroom library. The list includes chapter books on all levels so there are books for every reader on the nominee list. Since these are book award nominees, I know that they are excellent books for my students to read independently. My students will be exposed to different types of writing and multiple genres of literature.

My Project

In addition to enhancing our classroom library, we will also use these books to prepare for a school-wide Reading Tournament that is open to all third, fourth, and fifth grade students. To participate in the Reading Tournament, students must read all the books on the list and keep a reading log of what they read. Their reading logs must include the plot, setting, characters, problem and solution. Students must also form connections among the books on the list. By keeping reading logs, students must think about what they have read and process that thinking into words instead of just reading because they have to. In the Reading Tournament, students form teams and answer questions about the books using the information from their reading logs. With all of these books in our classroom, more of my students will be able to participate, and those who do not participate will have a wider selection of books to read just for fun!

I would love for my students to have a classroom set of these books to add to our library.

By having access to them in the classroom, my students will be able to "get lost in the book" and not have to worry about having an overdue book from the school or public library. Please help my students develop a life-long love of reading by donating these wonderful books to our classroom library.
