Bridging the Gap!

My students need 5 sets of bridge blocks to build arch bridges during center time.

My Students

Make their vision come to fruition! There's nothing like hands-on experiences to really get kids going. Though they've read about and visited arch bridges, they've yet to fully experience them by constructing them for themselves.

Our school is in a low-income area in NY where most of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Several of our students live in foster homes or at one time or another have had to stay in a shelter. Our school is an elementary school consisting of kindergarten-fifth grade classes. My first grade class in particular is an inclusion class; it's comprised of general education students as well as special education students. The students themselves are wonderful and are naturally curious.

My Project

We are doing a study of all of the different kinds of bridges. We already have a block center in our room as part of our study, however we are missing an important component: namely the arch bridge blocks. The kids have been able to construct all the different types of bridges EXCEPT for arch bridges. Help them internalize concepts such as the shape of arch bridges, how they are constructed and where the strongest part of the bridge is. It's one thing to see a bridge or read about it, but it's another thing entirely to build one with your own hands! I can't accept not providing them with an experience they're excited to embark upon simply because we don't have the materials to support it. Please support our kids' desire to learn!

Although many of their parents would love to provide their children with exciting learning experiences, they simply do not have the means with which to do it.

My goal is to provide them with exciting and enriching hands-on learning experiences that they would otherwise not have access to.
