My Students

My classroom has a set of 10 dictionaries and 10 thesaurus'. Then why do you need more, you ask? Well, these dictionaries and thesaurus' both have a print date of 1976!

I teach in a very rural school, and most of my student's come from single parent homes, where the parent works full time, and does everything they can to provide.

At the beginning of the year, I only put basic supplies on the back to school list, but we are in need of up to date materials. My students love to write, and are always wanting to use dictionaries and thesaurus', and I feel awful that they peruse the pages of VERY out of date resources.

My Project

We need a class set of dictionaries and thesaurus' to help find new words while writing. With a class set of up to date dictionaries and thesaurus' my students will be able to use these resources to make their writing come alive. In the second grade, writing becomes a favorite pastime, and I always encourage them to use these resources to be more creative, and to make their words come alive. We need a class set, so that everyone can work at the same time, and not have to wait on someone else to finish first. My students will not only be able to make their writing come alive, but they will also learn skills that will help them to succeed in the next grade level, and in life. Being able to use a dictionary will not only help my student's learn meanings of words but will also help them with spelling and pronunciation. The thesaurus will help their communication by being able to use different words rather than the same ones over and over. Learning to use a dictionary and thesaurus is important, and so many people go through life without these skills.

Why does it matter?

Why is it important for my student's to use these resources that are up to date? In Knowing how to use a dictionary and a thesaurus can help you build a better vocabulary. A dictionary contains a lot of useful information: all the meanings of a word according to subjects, what part of speech the word is used as, how to pronounce a word, and the origin of the word. A thesaurus can add variety to your vocabulary by giving you a different word for a word with the same meaning.
