My Students

Inspiration. That is often the difference between a good reader and an avid book-lover. I want my students to love reading and I think participation in the South Carolina Children's Book Award Program will ignite a love of reading in my students.

My students come from a middle income homes and have mostly 2 parent working families.

Our town has 3 military bases, so approximately 33% of our students come from military families. They are involved in many after school activities and because of this, rarely have time for reading. They also love movies (and stars), entertainment, and the latest video game craze. Thanks to all of this high tech interactivity, many of them have a hard time seeing how engaging curling up with a good book can be. I believe that many students just haven't found the right book to ignite that love of reading. By participating in the SC Book Award Program, my students will be exposed to 20 high quality pieces of literature and also feel like their opinions of the books matter because they will be voting on which ones they like the most. I feel like this will be highly motivational to students who often wonder if what they are doing in school is really relevant to the "outside world"

My Project

We will not just be reading these books; we will discuss overall themes and issues relative to the genres of the different books, as well as work on book talks/reviews and literature discussions. Despite the fact that all students will be reading a different book, there is much to be discussed about quality literature that is applicable to any book. The SCASL provides podcasts with book talks for each of the books also. We will watch these as we discuss the books we are choosing to read and then we will take that knowledge and learn to give book talks and record them to show to other 4th grade classes in our school. This project will then impact the students on many levels. I hope it will inspire them to read many pieces of quality literature (they have 20 to choose from!), they will learn to use technology as we listen to the podcasts and then film our own, and they will work on writing good book reviews to motivate others to read the books.

By donating to this project, you will allow my students to read high quality literature and feel like they are making a difference by voting on the South Carolina Children's Book of the Year.
