My Students

After working a very short time with First Graders I quickly learned that instant gratification yields the most benefit. Therefore, even though film developing can be done in less than 24 hours, having a photo printer in the classroom would be of tremendous benefit. Instant pictures are the best!

In our remote community, poverty is a common thread.

Many students want for the most common essentials. Six and seven year olds are blessedly innocent in the economic ways of the world and are probably unaware of the precarious position that most of their families are in. In many of their own homes they may have a camera that they take "pretend" pictures with however they rarely get to savor the pleasure of seeing the image that they have captured. To inspire them to compose a memory not of words but rather images and then see that picture printed instantly would be tremendously gratifying. If they are fortunate enough to have a home computer they are most likely only able to see the image and not able to have the print in their hands. If you will pardon the expression, First Graders are a lot like dogs. They don't see two dimensional things. What a special gift to be able to continue to build our First Grade memory books by being able to print our own photos.

My Project

Having a photo printer will help to bring the activity we are remembering, for our memory books, to life! First Graders are not always the most patient of folks. Saying to them, 'just as soon as I get these back from the developer' is as good as giving them a sleeping potion. However if you can print the photos, the activity that we all enjoyed in the morning can be in the memory books by that afternoon. Then the books go home that night and you can just imagine the discussion around the kitchen table, with freshly printed photos to help bring the event to life. With a photo printer on hand, through trial and error, the students can move beyond aim and shoot, to actual composition of the picture they are making. The possibilities abound as the time in First Grade moves along and the students become more "savvy" with the technology. The sooner I can get students to engage the world around them the more their imaginations will blossom with newer and more creative ideas.

I think it is paramount to remember I teach for the future!

The more that I can engage students in the present, for future endeavors, the more successful I am. The thought of a photo printer on hand reflects just that idea. Student made memory books will become a touchstone to the past for my students. Having the photos appear almost as quickly as they have been taken cements the memory into long term like nothing else. Using the phrase, 'remember when we did this' pales in comparison.
