These are the terms my students recognize when someone mentions the word "music." Every day, students face a world filled with technology.

Unfortunately, many music classrooms are not close to catching up with with the technological world in which students live. My classroom is no exception. Just as our nation's economy has suffered during recent months, my school system has felt the affects of budget cuts as well, including funds for our school music program (which has been cut for the last 3 years). Students need the hands-on experience of technology in education, but often do not get the opportunity with limited music budgets. My classroom is a perfect example. I have the privilege of teaching music to over 420 students in grades kindergarten through five in a Title I public school in Maryland. With many of my students coming from lower socio-economic families and communities, many of them do not have the financial ability to experience the use of music and technology at home.

My Project

With the use of a video camcorder, my students will experience learning in a new, technological way. For example, a video camcorder will allow students to be recorded while singing, playing recorders or classroom instruments during music class, and immediately played back on a large screen for feedback. Students will not only be able to hear how they performed, they would also see how they performed, allowing for continued learning as students critique their own and their classmates performances. Students will stay focused for music lessons, knowing how they perform will be recorded and shown for classmates (and possibly performances at a later date). A video camcorder, a cost which is beyond reach for my elementary school music budget, would be an incredible asset to my music classroom. Without help from DonorsChoose.org, it will be nearly impossible to provide technology such as this for my students.

I am anxious and eager to provide technology-enriched, learning experiences for my students, but often feel my hands are tied at what I am able to provide, due to financial costs.

My students and I need your help! Adding technology to music making makes the learning process more meaningful, memorable, productive and exciting. It is time for my students to have the chance to catch up with the technology-driven world around them. Please consider making a donation for this project.
