My Students

Been there, done that. Our Speech and Debate team specializes in interpretive events - taking a piece of literature or a script, and putting their own spin on it. Lately, it seems like whenever our speakers reach for a new script, all they find is one that's been done over and over again.

Our team is made up of 9th - 12th grade students at a comprehensive charter high school.

Many of the students are from low- to middle-income families and most are on track to attend college following graduation. They are a talented, hard-working group, and our team has had great success through the years as a result.

My Project

Our speakers are always looking for something new and different to set themselves apart from the crowd. In high school speech, the interpretive events require students to explore different pieces of literature, analyze the text, understand the characters and their motivations, cut a story down to 10 minutes, and put a voice to it. Speakers usually compete with the same piece all school year, with the goal of honing their performance to near-perfection. Starting out with good material is imperative - even the best speaker can be limited by a mediocre script. Our team has had the same books in our script library for years. Having new, fresh material from which to choose will provide motivation for the speakers to read, read, read while in search of that perfect story to tell.

Speech and Debate is one of the most highly-rated activities when it comes to college admissions.

Being on the Speech and Debate Team provides our students with an opportunity to develop critical thinking and communication skills that is arguably unmatched by any other activity offered. Your help will allow our team members to make the most of this extremely important opportunity.
