My Students

Language, perception, communication, compassion - these are the memories of language arts my students could capture in student-edited and signed Class "Yearbooks" of Poetry and prose from the year.

My ninth grade students are energetic, funny, and they enjoy working together in table learning groups.

Their skill levels are incredibly stratified - some read and write at a 5th grade level, while some understand advanced levels of reading and are advanced writers. My students are heterogeneous in their needs: some are exited English Language Learners, some have learning disabilities, and some are identified as Talented and Gifted. While their personalities and interests range, they all share their opinions and beliefs with great candor and ease. Our school is fairly large, and continues to suffer from the state's budget crisis: cutting teachers, cutting activities budgets, and taking away caps in freshmen core classes.

My Project

Although my students are incredibly different in their learning styles, needs, and background, they have all enjoyed studying poetry this spring. Many students who are not immediately successful at analysis and expository writing have "come alive" during this unit studying all kinds of poetry and poetic techniques. I want to give students the opportunity to choose their favorite piece of writing (most likely, this will be a poem) for class publication. Next to their poetry entry, students will write a bit about what they enjoyed about the poem or what the poem means to them. I will xerox all of the poems from a class for each student in that class. We will take a class picture and, using the color printer, we will print the picture as the cover to our "Sharing Voices: Poetry Yearbook"s. Finally, my teaching assistant students will bind the Yearbooks. Students will sign these Poetry Yearbooks at the end of the year, celebrating our writing and voices.

Creating community and empowering more students to share their voices are goals I set to face the challenge of a large high school where many feel "voiceless".

By celebrating and enjoying their voice and appreciating others' voices through their Poetry Yearbooks.
