This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Looking for inspiration? Our highly at-risk students face huge obstacles, challenges, and responsibilities. Most have dropped out of school before. Yet they are coming to school every day trying to earn their high school diploma.

I teach high school math - Algebra and Geometry.

Our school's mission is to provide a second chance for youths to graduate from high school. Most of our students have dropped out of other traditional or alternative schools at least once. Over half our students have children or are expecting. Of those who graduate, over 70% attend post-secondary education. Our students struggle with math. To make the subject more meaningful they need mathematical experiences that go beyond lecture and worksheets. Giving our students memorable and interesting projects results in deeper mathematical understanding and more insight into connections between math and real-life, both of which better prepare our students for college.

My Project

The telescope I am requesting for these projects will simply help us continue to build our math & astronomy unit, a co-curricular project addressing both math and science topics. In the unit students build their own simple telescope, participate in astronomy labs, and begin to comprehend the vast scales of time and space in the universe. College-prep topics to cover include scientific notation, solving equations to calculate focal lengths, dilations and magnification of images, and the physics of light and basic astronomy. This telescope will be used to observe the moon, planets, and deep sky objects (nebulae, open and globular clusters, and galaxies) on future observing nights.

With your generosity, you will give our at-risk students an educational experience through astronomy that will deepen their understanding of mathematics, help them graduate from high school, and bring them one step closer to succeeding in college!
