My Students

Can you imagine a school without a library? Unfortunately that is the current challenge we are facing at my school. There are books all over the school but no location where students can access them on a regular basis. The lack of a traditional library doesn't encourage or regulate any lending.

The students at my school are amazing young adults all studying visual, theater or culinary art.

They are extremely successful in their respective arts, many going on to four year colleges and universities to further their artistic abilities and deepen their knowledge. While they excel in creative ventures, they are also top notch in their traditional academic classes. Currently, our 11th graders had the highest percent of students proficient in reading in the entire state! They might not be "traditional" students, and many of them come from a less than supportive home environment, but they always rise to the occasion.

My Project

My students need a bookcase, writing desk and other furniture and organizing materials to create an inviting library space to peruse books and read their selections. These furnishings will transform a vacant storage space and re-purpose it into a lending library that our students will have access to, not just during the school year, but during the summer as well. One of the key factors in how often a teenager reads text is their access to a variety of texts that appeal to their interests. Many of our students do not go home to a text-rich environment and this library will provide them with the much-needed exposure to literature that could ignite their love of reading once again.

So often high school students stop reading for pleasure because other aspects of life fill up the time that was once used to explore the world through books.

This library will aid my school in creating a community of readers and lifelong learners.
