My Students

Can you remember having the opportunity in school to do something you really cared about? That's what this project is about... empowering students who care about the environment and in the process, changing their lives substantially for the better.

We normally think young people are digital experts, but that isn’t true across the digital divide.

In fact, none of my students have portable computers: many totally lack access. Acquiring a shared netbook for field research will help close the gap while also connecting them emotionally with school work. Specifically, hard data strongly suggests that urban minority students will engage academics more deeply when coupled with the opportunity to act on something they care about. This is 1!

My Project

Our students care MUCH about the environment, providing a POWERFUL vehicle for getting them academically engaged. Title I funds bought environmental monitoring probes that measure dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, dissolved solids, flow rate, P & N load. These probes are from the same manufacturer as the temperature probes I found in the school (on arrival last July). The probes the school already had plug into "read-out" units (called CBLs) that report a number to indicate what the probe detects. Unfortunately environmental monitoring probes I requested last August only arrived 2 weeks ago (mid Feb). When I plugged them in, I learned they won't work with the CBL units unless I run through graphing calculators (@$200ea). I also figured out that a MUCH better option is to plug probes into net book computers. They will do MUCH more (like real-time graphing, statistical analysis, etc.). Each new netbook allow us to deploy 4 water sentinel students to each creek/river monitoring site.
