My Students

My newspaper students and I recently watched a video that declared that newspaper subscriptions are down seven million people in the last 25 years, but on-line newspapers have gained 30 million unique readers in the last five years alone. We want to reach those readers but we need your help!

Everyone dreams of teaching students like my newspaper staff!

The 15-person staff is made up of extremely hard-working sophomores, juniors and seniors; besides creating the monthly-distributed Periscope, most of them are enrolled in numerous extracurricular activities and sports while maintaining excellent grade point averages. They represent a variety of the diverse student body at this 1600-plus public high school and Periscope serves to display their varied interests and awareness of school, community and nation.

My Project

The Flip camera that we would like to use would improve our program in several ways. First, it would allow me to take our journalism curriculum from a strictly print-based program to one of convergence journalism, in which we could combine print, video and photojournalism into one final product; the on-line newspaper. In turn, this process will help the students prepare for the journalism jobs of the future, as reporters are now being asked to do several jobs, including photography, video and writing, in one position. Their success will assist the future of our Periscope's journalism program as well, since we will be able to grow with each success.

I know that I have been blessed to get the opportunity to work with these students every day.

Please help me help them reach their journalism goals through the development of our on-line newspaper. These students value every opportunity presented to them. I'm positive that they will surpass our expectations with each publication of the paper.
