“A Part of” Instead Of “Apart From” The Class--Inclusion!

My students need level appropriate materials, such as games and series activities, that align with their 5th grade general education peers (materials for 5th grade inclusion special education students).

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my special education students be "a part of", and not "apart from" their general education peers. With the proper tools, the inclusion program can be successful--and special education students can truly be in the "least restrictive learning environment."

As an urban city Special Education 5th grade teacher, I am excited about the opportunity to help build the foundational skills within reading for approximately 20 special needs students within my charge each year.

The program that our district utilizes with the learning disabled involves inclusion. Inclusion is a term which expresses commitment to educate each special needs child, to the maximum extent appropriate, in the school and classroom he or she would otherwise attend. It involves bringing the support services to the child (rather than moving the child to the services) and requires only that the child will benefit from being in the class (rather than having to keep up with the other students).

My Project

Of these 20 students, each functions within his/her own IEP (individual education plan) which focuses on the appropriate level of the child. For this reason, as a 5th grade Special Education teacher—I work with reading levels that range from a pre-primer up to approximately early 4th grade. Traveling from room to room requires that my materials be concise, applicable to what is being taught within the general education classroom, while being level appropriate for the learning disabled student.

The materials selected include learning games, review activities, and test preparation on levels ranging from 1st through 4th/5th grade.

These materials will enable the inclusion program to meet the needs of the individual child while helping the child feel “a part of” the class instead of “apart from” the class by provided materials and activities that align with the content currently being covered in the 5th grade general education classroom. Help them make connections and gain acceptance!!!
