My Students

Research essays and projects, typing up homework, finding supplemental primary and secondary sources: many high schoolers struggle with these tasks due to lack of accessible technology. With 3 laptops in my classroom, my students could explore the world of history and geography in their own time!

A fabulous student has been helping me write this proposal!

I've been bouncing ideas off of her and listening to her suggestions. Like her, all my students are concerned about their education, curious, helpful, and generally lovable. Our school is a high poverty and diverse public school with a large population of ESL students. They are talkative and are always looking for answers. Having computers in the classroom would empower them to answer their own questions! Since the school is so diverse, we sometimes struggle understanding various cultures. In my classes, we look at the geography and history of cultures and try to embrace all of them. Computers would help my students express their opinions in a neutral ground (classes will have blogs next year) and try to bring the gaps between all students.

My Project

My students and I are asking for 3 laptops for my classroom. Programs like Google Earth provide visual knowledge of other locations and make our study of current events and content knowledge all the more real. Being able to "fly" to Baghdad after reading about the Green Zone gives a level of understanding not otherwise available to my students. Mapping tools like MapTool have students create their own maps, synthesizing knowledge about how cultures can form boundaries, and how people and economies interact. Research essays become much more manageable when there are resources, space, and time to complete the research in a welcoming environment. Discussion continues on classroom discussion blogs, giving voice to shy students and further time to think and research. My students will be able to travel the world with these computers, using them to apply and enhance their content knowledge, while gaining valuable research and critical-thinking skills.

Donations to this proposal would provide students with a chance to gain life-long skills that they can use to excel in their studies.

The research and technological skills that students will learn can be shared with their peers and the community at large. As a teacher, I would gain confidence when assigning research projects. Students would have opportunities to learn, while having fun. As my student says, "We need computers!"
