My Students

"Are you almost done?" are the words my students hear every time they are given the task of making copies of drill charts, music compositions, or information packets. If 90 marchers receive a drill packet, and each packet is 40 pages, the teacher waiting to copy 30 quizzes ignites with frustration!

We are an inner city magnet school for the arts and humanities serving grades 7-12.

My band program has transformed from 17 students in 2005 to 150 in 2010. My students are a hard working group of young people determined to show the world that although they face a multitude of challenges, they are no different than the best band programs in the state. 75% plus receive free or reduced lunch, and for most, band is their "home away from home." Next year I will welcome 6th graders to the band family. My students are a very diverse group. I primarily teach African-American students but I also serve students with heritage from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Venezuela. It is truly amazing to look and see the beautiful melting pot within our band. We are very proud of who we are, and are continuing to make a name for ourselves with every hard working step of the way!

My Project

A Multi- function machine will primarily provide a way for my students to copy and fax scholarship information, college applications, as well as receive communications directly to the band area. Our school schedule has resulted in shorter class periods. Whenever we are in a desperate situation for drill chart copies, or composition copies, by the time a student ventures to the other side of the building to make 1 copy, 1/3 of the instructional class time is missed. This machine will dramatically improve the quality of education for the students by affording them the entire class period for learning rather than running errands. We are also blessed to already have established FAX lines in our area which are not accessible to the other areas of the building. With this machine, parade applications, emergency performance requests, and communications with the central office will be executed efficiently.

While on the surface this request seems to be asking for a luxury; instructing 6 grade levels now, and 7 grade levels next year has made the need for a multi- function machine a necessity.

Help me better serve my students by having the means to carry out tasks within the walls of our band area. This machine will be in my office, and will not be available to the general school population. The machine will be cared for, maintained, and put to use in ways beyond the scope of this text box!
