HP Netbooks To Help Make Us Champions

My students need an HP Netbook computer to help them do the research necessary to help them become the best speakers they can possibly be.

My Students

Have you ever been in the situation where you felt you were prepared for some great task that you were about to face but, when actually facing it, realized how wrong you were and how much more prepared your competition was? It's happened to us before and I never want it to happen again.

Students from all ethnic, socio-economic, and cultural groups form my speech team.

Students come to school from less than a block away to from all over the city to attend school, mixing the poor with the wealthy, minority with majority, and native English speakers with English language learners. Speech & Debate requires students to perform a great deal of research. Our classroom has a total of five computers: two older computers, one of which is a desktop located in my teacher's office, and the other an older laptop located in a central part of the room, and also three recently donated HP Netbooks. Our students work together on their research and in the creation of their speeches, and our current classroom set-up makes it difficult at times for this to happen. With 20 students on the speech team, and only five computers available for use, students can go quite a while before getting a chance to do their research with those they are working with in our Speech room.

My Project

Having HP Netbooks in the classroom would allow more students access to the Internet during our practice sessions (before school, at lunch and after school), providing more opportunity to perform research. The portability of the HP netbooks would allow students to more freely use the open space of our classroom and also allow larger groups of students to work together on research and on building their cases (for debate). This would result in the kind of collaborative effort anyone would hope to see in a team activity. Speech and Debate is one of the most highly-rated activities when it comes to college admissions. Being a member of the Speech Team provides students an opportunity to not only challenge themselves in the arena of debate but to also develop the critical thinking and communication skills so necessary for success in college and in the world. The benefits of Speech are unmatched by any other activity offered at most schools because of how they bleed into so many subjects.

My students need HP Netbooks to stay prepared and competitive and to also increase their chances of finishing on top not just at tournaments but also in school, college, and life.

Funding this project will allow twenty students who come to me mostly from college prep and AP English classes to become better writers, better thinkers, and so much more. Better writing and thinking skills will translate into a student more prepared to do well on the SAT and ACT tests and to pass the AP English test.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
