My Students

Living in a small rural community it is often hard to see outside. The little things that happen seem so large. To take a look through a different window and peer over the horizon is what I hope to do with this project. Reading about others' lives is important to setting a glimpse of who we are.

My students don't see a variety of cultures or ethnicities on a daily basis.

We have a large Native American population, but few others. I see tensions, I see bonding. I see students who are so capable of empathy; but not seeing exactly how their lives will affect other students in other places not only here in the United States, but in the world.

My Project

Through the novels we will explore how we have touched and are touched by others in the world. Using some of the standards, The Things They Carried, we will not only look at the effect of the Vietnam War on the United States, but also the effect on the Vietnamese. We will read When My Name Was Keoko and explore the Japanese effect on Korea. Purple Hibiscus will take us to Nigeria, and Code Talker will take us through the American experience in the Pacific through the eyes of Native American Code Talkers. During our novel explorations students will go out into our community and take snap shots of their world. Then through PowerPoint and Posters explore their place in the world.

Often, students see only the negative.

This year, they have seen three of our projects receive funding. They have seen with their own eyes that there are people outside of their community who care about them and want them to become informed citizens of the world, not just their small community.
