Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a Title 1 (high poverty) elementary school in New York. My students are incredibly bright and motivated 4th Graders.

They are extremely inquisitive and love to observe their environment.

They enjoy the arts and expressing themselves. They are well on their way to becoming scholars. They are a secure bunch of 28 students who are intelligent and driven to succeed. We are fortunate to be at a school that builds a strong sense of community. We are like a family here and we always work as a team. Our school might be located in a low poverty neighborhood but our students are high performing. They excel and love to learn. Our motto is: Where young minds grow. Please help us flourish.

My Project

I want to incorporate technology into the classroom. However, due to budget cuts it's impossible to purchase the necessary materials. I know my students would greatly benefit from having flip camcorders. The flip will promote learning. We will use them in many ways. We can use them to video interview/ narratives. For example, we can act as reporter and interview numerous community members and later transcribe the interviews. This activity would promote communication, technological, and writing skills. Furthermore, we can also video murals, landmarks and places in and around New York City. Return to class and closely observe the images that would provoke critical thinking and develop an understanding of their environment. The flip camcorder will give a new lens to explore with. We can video lessons, presentations, interviews, and special events.

This project is so important to me because I strongly feel that technology is missing from inner city classrooms thus, putting our children at great disadvantage.

Putting cameras in our future leaders hands will empower the students to become activist. It will help them shape their community by giving them the tool to have their voices heard.
