My Students

Remember the fun of building sand castles on the beach or pouring sand back and forth or just making your hand print and thinking it was pretty special?

I have a class of Special Needs Pre K children in a very rural, economically depressed county.

My class has a wide array of medical and mental challenges. These children are 3 and 4 years old; most of them are away from their mothers and homes for the first time. They spend a full day at school working hard to understand class routines, social interactions and educational foundations.

My Project

We are hoping to be able to fill a sand table with Moon Sand. Moon Sand can be be used as a sensory integration activity with children with special needs such as autism, cerebral palsy or visual differences. For those with physical challenges it encourages children with limited range of motion to reach and bend. It will be used to help a child work through strong emotions as it can be squeezed and pushed around to release restlessness and frustration.

Sand play is important to the development of my Special Needs children.

Their play with sand is the earliest stage of experience in shaping matter. They learn science from pouring and measuring. It is a hands-on experience that provides tactile stimulation. Your contribution to this project will provide hours and days and months of learning and pleasure to years with of these young students. Thank you for considering their needs!
