My Students

I teach third grade in a public K-5th grade school in the inner-city. The school is in a high-need community. The chairs in my class are all old and dirty and beat up.

Our school services more than 500 students.

About 90% of them live below the poverty line. The rest of them live just above it. Poverty is one of the biggest factors for children for being at risk of failure in school. The students at my school all have at least some of these other risk factors as well: welfare dependence, absent parents, one-parent families, and parents without a high school diploma.

My Project

I try to make my classroom as colorful and inviting as possible. Thanks to DonorsChoose, my friends and family, and my own resourcefulness we do have a very nice classroom. Probably the nicest in the school. However, the desks and chairs in my room are so old and dingy.

I just want to show my students that they deserve nice things too.

I want them to walk into my room and be able to sit in a clean chair that doesn't wobble. A chair that won't cut them or pinch their legs. I just want them to have what every kid deserves.
