My Students

"Where is my favorite book?" This question is asked many times during the day by my kindergartners. They lose valuable time looking for books that interest them and that are at their reading level. These multi-colored book bins will provide the organization and easy access to their favorite books.

We are a low-income school in a rural community.

Many of our children do not have library cards so the books they read a school are their primary source of literature. There will be many budget cuts in the upcoming school year so only the basic materials will be covered. By organizing books and keeping them available to my students will ensure a love for literacy. However book bins are not covered in our basic material budget. Our librarian is being cut to a part-time position so book bins will also help the students get their hands on more books!

My Project

The books bins will provide an organized system for the children. Each child will have a book bin with their name on it. In the beginning of the year, I will solely be responsible for placing the books in their bins. The books will be leveled books and sight word books. I will also place books on topics they show interest in throughout the school year. During the middle to end of the year, students and I will converse and put books in the bin together. The students will feel ownership and will keep track of their books instead of wasting time looking for the favorites books to read.

Students will be exposed to a wide variety of books then students will be able to pick books that interest them and keep them close at hand.

The book bins will be used during independent reading and reading to a partner instruction. Organization and routine are very important in a classroom of 25 kindergarten students.
