My students need single copies and small group sets of 37 Patricia Polacco books for silent reading time, guided reading lessons, and to teach different reading skills in the classroom.

My Students

"Honey is sweet, and so is knowledge, but knowledge is like the bee that made that sweet honey, you have to chase it through the pages of a book." (taken from "Thank you, Mr. Falker"). My students want the ability to find this knowledge through Patricia Polacco's many wonderful books.

My students come from a rural area in Georgia.

They are financially unable to purchase quality literature. This school year I have used a couple Patricia Polacco books I purchased myself to teach reading connections to my students. The students in my class have become hooked to Patricia Polacco's inspiring, knowledgeable books. The library at our school only has a few of her books. A classroom library made up of Patricia Polacco books would not only encourage my students to read during silent reading time, but to also have amazing literature to use during their guided reading lessons. These books will also give my students a window into other cultures they may never know about otherwise. The school my student's attend is a title one school, that has 67 % of the students on free or reduce lunch.

My Project

When my students get to third grade they are on a variety of different reading levels. Patricia Polacco writes children's books on many different levels. Her books are encouraging stories that will touch so many of their lives not only by giving them a story to read. In "Thank you Mr. Falker" she wrote about how when she was a child she suffered from a learning disability and how she finally learned to read when she was in fifth grade. This is a touching story to students who struggle in school. I want to show them it is not too late, you can do it! Some of the activities we will be able to do in the classroom are guided reading lessons, learning about different reading concepts such as inferencing, sequencing, and making connections, also reading for pleasure throughout the school year. Learning through these books will also help the students write response to literature papers. My students will not only learn their curriculum, but to never give up no matter how hard things get.

My students want so badly to succeed in life.

These books will not only teach them reading lessons, culture, and history, they will learn about perseverance and character building. My students have already been inspired by some of her stories this year. They want more and deserve more.
