My Students

Imagine my surprise, as a third grade teacher, when I was presented with the question, "Mrs. L, where am I from?" Even though our students learn about their community and state, the truth is that so many of our students lack the experience to have a true understanding of where they are from.

We live in a high poverty area and most of our students are not exposed to early learning skills.

Our students are very lucky to attend a Pre-K through third grade school that is extremely child-centered and aimed at being developmentally appropriate. I teach in a third grade classroom and we use centers to enrich our learning and to build experiences. However, most of our students come from low-income homes and have not had the opportunity to travel or even explore their own community. While I try to expose them to as many experiences as I can (through activities, field trips, and the Internet), I am often faced with the challenge of their lack of understanding of where they are from.

My Project

I am requesting a large classroom area rug that will display the United States of America. Not only will they be able to see which state we live in, they will also see where they live in relation to places around our country. Many of the stories that we read take place in other areas of our country - New Mexico, Texas, New York, etc. In order to truly comprehend the stories, the students need to be able to make a connection to where they live. Because my classroom is built around centers and interactive activities, the small globe and poster of the United States does not capture my students attention. By having the rug, students will actually be able to walk, touch, and "experience" our country. I believe this will enrich their learning and inspire them to learn more about where they are from and the places they can go!

I want to be able to make my students more "worldly".

I can teach them about different people and places, we can read stories and complete projects. However, the only way for them to understand people and places different from their own, is to understand where they are from. Please help me to provide this understanding at an early age so they can grow to be productive citizens of not only their community, but also their state and country.
