Seven Skills for Second Grade!

My students need 29 children's books, from "The Giving Tree" to "The Day It Rained Tortillas".

My Students

Most of my students have never traveled outside of Florida. These 20 books will expose them to the worlds (both magical and real) that exist outside of their neighborhoods.

I teach first grade at a low income charter school in Florida.

Many of my students started the school year significantly behind grade level. Throughout the year, I have worked to shape my students into active thinkers who feel empowered by their own learning. Now my class feels comfortable asking questions about the world---those beloved essential WHY questions---that every teacher loves to hear. These books will help me provide them with the answers.

My Project

I am requesting 20 books that will build and enhance critical thinking skills, multicultural awareness, and communication standards in my diverse class of 21 students. Each book will be examined as a targeted lesson. Accompanying discussion questions will broach reading comprehension strategies as well as fundamental understandings of our world. For example, Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree not only exemplifies sequence of events, but it also underscores the importance of selflessness and empathy. Purposefully using literature in this way allows my students to appreciate literacy as way to gain more information about the world and their own lives.

America is becoming a rapidly diverse nation.

My students come from all over the world, but see little of their own background reflected in the curriculum. This small addition to my classroom library will have an exponential effect on my students' appreciation of their own culture and their place in the world. As a first grade teacher, I am setting them on the road to reading and to building positive relationships. These books will help me do both.
