My Students

"One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his greatest surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't." -Henry Ford With these hands-on math supplies, my students can realize that they CAN understand and relate to real life mathematical concepts.

My students are wonderful children who have already experienced so many negative things in their short lives.

I want to make school a safe and exciting place for learning. I put my heart and soul into teaching them hands-on mathematics, but without basic supplies I am unable to do as many things with them as I would like. The school my student attend is a high poverty campus with the majority of the students receiving services for free lunches. These children are very deserving of these materials for the very fact that their basic needs food and shelter are barely met each day.

My Project

The fraction circles, plastic money coins, and geometric shapes will put learning into the hands of the students. They will be able to hear, see, and touch the concepts we are learning about that they normally would just see on paper. The capacity and weight set will allow hands-on measurement with lasting effects on their love of measuring. This concept is a difficult subject in our school to conquer with the lack of hands on supplies. The math bingo and other games will make learning fun and easy for the students. I know they will come to math ready to learn with these manipulatives!

To go back to Henry Ford, "The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand." With these materials, my students will be able to truly understand the processes in mathematics.

I will not be just teaching them any longer, but I will be watching them grow and learn through the vast experiences these materials will bring. The memories of these hands-on experiences will last a lifetime!
