My Students

We are looking for a way to have the industrial era in American history come to life for our students. They should get a good picture of what is was like to live and work in this time of great change and what were the challenges and choices they faced. Textbooks do a woefully inadequate job.

My US History class is a sophomore class in a low income high school in Oregon.

We have a shortage of quality supplemental materials and are looking to augment our curriculum with some primary source documents that are presented in a way that will be accessible to them to help their reading skills improve for college as well as improve understanding of the curriculum.

My Project

With this book my students will get a better first hand glimpse of life in the late 1800's. They will be able to read primary source documents interspersed with supporting narrative which is presented in a highly understandable and interesting manner. It will be used to support the textbook and give more in depth information of the central events and conflicts of the industrial era.

Our students need more access to primary sources.

They need more materials which give them practice reading the kinds of texts they will read in college as well as for our state reading testings. This book is excellent in both regards. The parts we have read together in class have been enjoyed by my students and retention was higher than with the textbook.
