My Students

My students are struggling to complete our school newspaper as we don't have the necessary technology to type, edit, and layout an official school newspaper.

Students in my journalism class are engaged in the newspaper creation process and have a strong desire to not only learn about the media but try their hand at writing and publishing their own articles.

Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school and have the ultimate goal of attending college. Almost all of the students at my school come from low-income families, live in city housing projects, and are not exposed to technology and how to think critically about the media.

My Project

Our Journalism class has been working slowly over the year to produce a quality school newspaper. We don't have money in the budget to print a newspaper, but we are designing and developing an online newspaper. However, our school has limited technology and our class is unable to work effectively without computers for research, typing, editing, and web-design. Through our class, students are learning fundamentals of journalism, developing writing skills, and further examining the media and how information is shared both in print and electronically today.

By donating to this project, you will enable my students to use these new laptops to publish a school newspaper online that will share both school news and demonstrate their newly acquired journalism skills as well as their interests in news writing.
