My Students

Children can love to write! I want to provide them with the tools and setting to become inspired, self-driven "authors", and create a community of thoughtful writers by implementing an authentic writer's workshop.

My kindergarten students are a diverse group of wonderful children!

They come from varied backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and home lives. Our school is a technology magnet elementary school in the south, with a high poverty classification. We have an amazing staff, and we serve some amazing children, some of whom overcome a lot just to be at school each day. They love to create, write, learn to read and be read to, learn about math, do science experiments, explore social studies topics, and more. They are funny and sweet, and light up when they master a new skill or become engaged in learning.

My Project

We will use primary composition journals each day so that students can keep a writer's notebook. These have space for both writing and drawing on each page, which suits the kindergarteners' developmental needs as beginning writers. Keeping a writer's notebook will help them to develop into thoughtful, creative writers, and give them ownership of their learning. We will use Smart Start story paper, some with space for drawing and some with space for writing, to publish pieces, to make booklets, for writing prompts and reading response activities, and more. The way the paper is lined helps students to remember how to form letters and where they should be on a line. We will use date stamps for each piece, both in the journals and on the paper, to chronicle student growth over the course of the year as we save work to each child's portfolio. The other items will be used as well as necessities for creating written pieces.

My hope is that by providing my students with the materials to participate in an authentic, meaningful writer's workshop each day that they will grow to become a community of thoughtful, creative, lifelong writers.

I want them to have choices in their writing, the tools to chronicle their growth, and a variety of mediums with which to work.
