My Students

Have you ever worn one of your own creations? Most people haven't, but this is an experience I want all 600 of my art students to have. And why not reinforce our school's character education program at the same time?

I teach in a rural elementary school with 600 students coming through my art classroom every week.

They mostly come from high poverty situations, and about 75% of them receive free and reduced lunch. Also, many of my students have special needs. However, no matter where they come from or what life is like outside of my room, I like to provide new and exciting opportunities in a safe and loving environment when they come to see me. I want them to create freely and feel proud of their artistic accomplishments, even if they aren't all particularly artistic. My goal is for all of my students to leave my room feeling successful and worthy.

My Project

Our school, like many others, focuses on character words such as "respect" and "responsibility". We emphasize one of these at a time and then review and celebrate them all later in the year. This year, my principal and I were discussing how the kids could write and illustrate some of these on their t-shirts and wear them in a special character celebration. What a beautiful and exciting way to emphasize the positive! As part of this project I need a large quantity of fabric dyes, fabric markers, and fabric crayons.

I hope this project will do the following: boost children's self-esteem by allowing them to create and wear their own creations, help our students focus on the character words we try to reinforce daily at our school, and help build an even stronger sense of community through a special celebration after the shirts are completed.
